The program of this year’s SMSF Association Technical Summit, to be held in Sydney on 6 to 7 August, is designed to give practitioners practical insights into the many ethical dilemmas, compliance pitfalls and behavioural challenges currently facing the sector.
“In today’s environment, where one misstep can lead to litigation or loss of professional standing, SMSF professionals are facing unprecedented scrutiny from clients, regulators and peers,” association chief executive Peter Burgess said.
“Sound technical knowledge alone is no longer enough. SMSF professionals must now demonstrate professional judgment, ethical clarity, compliance discipline and strategic foresight in every client interaction.”
The summit’s program was put together to help practitioners support their clients without crossing regulatory boundaries, deliver holistic advice, avoid problems with regulators, maintain professional judgment when clients present moral and ethical dilemmas, and learn from courtroom decisions.
The association stated SMSF practitioners operate in a high-compliance environment and the summit is intended to help them navigate the complex scenarios that come across their desks daily, and presenters will use real-world case studies to help attendees understand and navigate difficult client situations.
Keynote sessions will include Burgess’s update on SMSF legislation, a session on Where Aged Care Meets SMSF Advice from Aged Care Steps director Louise Biti and Lessons from The Courtroom by DBA Lawyers special counsel Bryce Figot.
There will also be workshops on navigating ethical dilemmas, SMSF pensions, death benefits, business real property, fund loans and cognitive decline.
