The SMSF Association has bolstered its technical team with a new appointment to assist members through the current period of change and reform.

The SMSF Association has strengthened its senior executive team with the appointment of John Perri as technical manager.

Perri will join Fabian Bussoletti as part of the industry body’s technical services team and will report to head of technical Mary Simmons. The new role will see him concentrate on building the organisation’s technical support capabilities as the industry goes through massive change and reform.

“I am delighted to join the association at such a pivotal time for the sector. With significant reforms reshaping advice and retirement policy, I look forward to contributing to its mission of supporting members and advancing the SMSF sector through high-quality technical resources and guidance,” he said.

He brings to his new position more than three decades’ experience in the financial services industry and most recently he was head of technical strategy at AMP, leading the company’s TapIn technical team. His employment term at AMP spanned more than 30 years, beginning in the role of technical manager, and he is a highly respected professional in the SMSF industry.

“Our members and the SMSF sector will benefit immensely from John’s extensive experience, technical knowledge and background in adviser education,” SMSF Association chief executive Peter Burgess noted.

“John is highly regarded across the financial planning profession, with a long history of presenting at industry conferences, including our national conference.”

Perri will support the growth of the association’s SMSF specialised adviser accreditation program through the development and delivery of high-quality technical content as interest in and take up of the offerings continue to grow.

The SMSF Association reported a 6 per cent increase in membership in the 2025 financial year and a 12 per cent rise in SMSF specialists, with more than 210 people completing that dedicated accreditation program.

“John’s appointment underscores our commitment to delivering high-quality, best-in-class technical support and strengthening our voice in key policy debates,” Burgess concluded.
