SMSFA returns to in-person national conference

SMSFA conference

The SMSF Association (SMSFA) has announced its first face-to-face conference since 2020 as coronavirus restrictions begin to ease across the country.

The SMSF Association (SMSFA) has announced its first physical conference since 2020 will be in Adelaide next year as the pathway out of COVID-19 restrictions becomes more attainable.

The industry body’s 2022 National Conference, to be held at the Adelaide Convention Centre from 16-18 February, will explore changes to the SMSF sector in 2021 and a variety of technical topics, SMSFA deputy chief executive and policy and education director Peter Burgess said.

“This national conference is really shaping up as one to remember. For the first time in two years delegates will be able to network and socialise in person,” Burgess said.

“Far-reaching changes, such as the new SuperStream rules for SMSF rollovers, director identification numbers, six-member funds, the indexation of the contribution and transfer balance caps, the budget changes and the new rules for non-arm’s-length expenditure, will have an impact on most aspects of an SMSF.”

The two-and-a-half-day program will include workshops aided by case studies and discussions with peers and industry professionals to analyse technical subjects.

Burgess, who is also the national conference program director, said: “[It is an] amazing line-up of speakers, the all-stars of the SMSF sector.”

He further noted the topics covered during the event are set to include non-arm’s-length income, pensions, topical audit issues, in-house assets, cognitive decline and SMSF funding strategies.

“All these topics will be covered and workshopped in detail, so, in my opinion, this event will cover the broadest range of topics presented by the most diverse range of speakers ever assembled at our national conference,” he said.

“The sector is enjoying a boom period in terms of growth in members and funds under management, positive changes are occurring at a regulatory and legislative level. I would urge anyone involved in our super sector to attend.”
