New ATO facility proving popular

ATO myGovID

A significant number of taxpayers have started using the ATO myGovID facility with SMSF trustees being encouraged to sign on to the new system.

The new ATO myGovID facility is proving very popular among taxpayers with a significant number of individuals already having made use of it.

“We’ve had over 5 million logins to the ATO portals using myGovID so far and that’s because it’s simple, secure and flexible,” ATO chief digital officer John Dardo said.

In addition, Dardo revealed enhancements will be made to the service in the immediate future to enable it to broaden its reach and relevance to members of the public.

“We’ve developed a solution for employees who do not have the required identity documents and can’t set up their myGovID, for example, non-residents. It will be available in mid-March, allowing these users to make the move to myGovID then,” he noted.

The myGovID facility has been developed to succeed the AUSkey and Manage ABN Connections channels associated with the ATO Business Portal.

As such, the regulator is urging all SMSFs using the ATO Business Portal to establish access to the service via the myGovID facility immediately.

“We’re encouraging ATO Business Portal users to make the move from AUSkey to myGovID now before AUSkey retires,” Dardo said.

“Don’t leave it to the last minute, get set up today. Download the myGovID app and link it to a business using RAM (Relationship Authorisation Manager).”

To establish a myGovID, SMSF trustees have been told to firstly download the app from the App Store or Google Play and to use their Australian identity documents to enrol.

Next, trustees have been advised to login to the RAM using myGovID to link their SMSF.

Finally, trustees have been asked to authorise any other individuals they would like to give RAM access to with regard to the SMSF.

With regard to the process, the ATO has asked trustees to ensure their details on the Australian Business Register are current to allow the RAM system to use the most up-to-date information.
