Crump takes over as SPAA chair

The SMSF Professionals’ Association of Australia (SPAA) has appointed Peter Crump as its new chair.

Crump takes on the new role as a result of Andrew Hamilton’s two-year term as chairman of the board coming to a mandatory conclusion.

“I have an enormous sense of pride in what has been collectively achieved over the past two years building on the firm foundation of the previous nine years,” Hamilton said during his closing speech at the 2014 SPAA National Conference in Brisbane last week.

“More importantly, I have a real sense that SPAA and the specialists we represent are on the cusp of even greater things in the years to come.”

He described his term as chair as both a demanding and exhilarating experience and pointed out the affirmation of the achievements of the professional body.

“Treasury, the ATO (Australian Taxation Office), ASIC (Australian Securities and Investments Commission), the government and the opposition have all come out publicly and stated their support for SMSFs and how healthy the sector is,” he said.

“Furthermore, what is indeed pleasing for SPAA is the fact that the ATO, ASIC and Treasury have actually come to Adelaide to seek our views on the issues of the day rather than us having to knock down their door.

“From our perspective this is very encouraging and impacts the importance they are placing on our sector and SPAA’s involvement in it.”

Hamilton thanked his fellow board members for making his role easier, but reserved special thanks for SPAA chief executive Andrea Slattery.

“Last but certainly not least I’d like to thank Andrea. Her passion, industry knowledge, experience and connections continue to be of value to SPAA,” he said.

He welcomed Crump as the new chair and praised the milestones he had already achieved as a board member.

“[This] coupled with his extensive industry knowledge, work ethic and commitment to SPAA will make him a worthy chairman of this organisation,” he said.

“I’m sure I join with you all in the audience in wishing Peter all the best.”
