The ATO has removed the display of the electronic service address, referred to as an alias, on its register of SMSF messaging providers.
The change has been made to further encourage SMSF members to comply with the new SuperStream requirements.
Specifically, SMSFs that are yet to register with an SMSF messaging provider will be unable to use electronic service addresses within employer contributions messages sent via the SuperStream system.
“SMSFs must register with a provider before using the alias to ensure that contributions are not sent in error,” the ATO said.
“SMSF messaging providers offering the option for individual or bulk registration of SMSFs will provide an electronic service address to the SMSF after registration has been completed.”
To ensure SMSFs are not caught out by this operational change, the ATO is compelling each member of an SMSF to take the necessary steps to comply with the SuperStream regime.
The ATO said members needed to communicate with their employers about their intention to make contribution payments using SuperStream, ensure they were registered with an SMSF messaging provider, obtain an electronic service address and provide their electronic service address, fund bank account number, bank-state-branch number and Australian business number to their employer.
