Burgess returns to SMSFA

Peter Burgess SMSF Association

Peter Burgess has been appointed as the new deputy chief executive and director of policy and education at the SMSF Association.

SuperConcepts technical education services general manager Peter Burgess will be vacating his current position later this month, having been appointed to a new role as deputy chief executive and director of policy and education with the SMSF Association (SMSFA).

Burgess will fill the new position on 1 June, with his planned departure from SuperConcepts scheduled for 22 May.

The appointment ends a seven-year stint with SuperConcepts and marks a return to the SMSFA, with Burgess having previously been the industry body’s technical director for three years between 2010 and 2013 and also a board member from 2007 to 2009.

SMSFA chair Andrew Hamilton expressed his pleasure that the organisation has been able to recruit a person to the role with the experience and respect Burgess possesses.

These sentiments were echoed by SMSFA chief executive John Maroney, who noted: “Peter has built up a well-deserved reputation across SMSF policy and technical issues over many years, so to have him back in the association fold will be a boost for our members and for the SMSF sector in general.”

Burgess said he was excited to be rejoining the industry body at such a critical time for the sector as it continues to manage the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and other disruptive matters, such as the Financial Adviser Standards and Ethics Authority education and code of conduct requirements.

“At such an important and pivotal time for the SMSF sector, I am looking forward to bringing the experience and technical knowledge I have accumulated over many years to the table and making a positive contribution to the growth of the association and the sector,” he said.

He also acknowledged his time leading the SMSF technical team at SuperConcepts.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at SuperConcepts. It’s not every day you get the opportunity to assemble and then lead a team with the collective experience and expertise of the SuperConcepts technical team,” he said.

“It was a very difficult decision to leave, but the decision was made easier by the calibre of the team I am leaving behind. It means SuperConcepts is well placed to continue to provide the technical support that its clients need and have come to expect.

“I wish SuperConcepts every success in the future and fortunately for me it’s not goodbye. As the largest administration business in the SMSF sector, SuperConcepts is an important stakeholder and I look forward to now working with SuperConcepts in my new role with the association.”

SuperConcepts chief executive Lara Bourguignon also noted Burgess’s contribution to the organisation.

“Peter has played an instrumental role in mentoring our team and leaves behind a legacy of technical expertise and client focus that will continue to benefit our clients. He has focused on building our brand and developing processes and offerings tailored to client needs,” Bourguignon said.

“We wish Peter all the best in his new role and look forward to continuing our close relationship with him and the association in the future.”
