The ATO has released its third SMSF trustee education module, which covers the running of a fund and follows the introduction of two other online guides that dealt with the establishment and winding-up processes.
The new course is available for free from the ATO’s small business tax and super education website and covers the obligations of trustees when running an SMSF, how to manage contributions, rollovers and fund investments, paying super benefits, asset valuations, record-keeping, and reporting and administration.
The regulator stated the module was designed for self-paced learning and tracked the progress of users, and provided a certificate of completion for those who registered at the site.
The new module is part of a suite of SMSF education products from the ATO, with the two previous courses related to creating and closing a fund released in July 2024.
All the courses include an assessment component to ensure trustees have acquired the knowledge required to meet their obligations, with the ATO stating: “These resources support you in meeting your regulatory and reporting obligations.
“Our publications and online education modules contain key points on what you need to know when starting, running or winding up your self-managed super fund.
“They form a suite of education products aimed at supporting you, as a SMSF trustee, with your regulatory and reporting obligations.
“You can use our publications as a reference tool, while our online education modules are interactive and provide an excellent opportunity for you to build your knowledge.
“Completing all three builds a comprehensive understanding of every stage of running your SMSF.”
