The ATO has appointed Alister Boyes to take on the role of assistant commissioner in its SMSF regulatory branch, a position recently vacated by Justin Micale after he took on a new role related to superannuation and employer obligations.
Micale’s role was temporarily filled by Paul Delahunty in an acting capacity, but Boyes, who has been with the ATO for more than 30 years, will tackle it on a permanent basis.
Prior to this appointment, he was most recently individuals and intermediaries, technical leadership and advice acting assistant commissioner and said his collective experience provided a well-rounded understanding of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for the SMSF sector.
“In my previous role … I gained valuable experience in technical issues, implementing new public advice and guidance, and engaging with external stakeholders,” he said in an update released by the ATO.
“In my new role, my key focus will be on working closely with trustees, auditors and other professionals to ensure they have the support and information needed to meet their taxation and regulatory obligations, and addressing our highest risks with strategies that impact at scale.”
He said he was committed to a “collaborative approach”, building on the sector’s strong foundations to ensure its integrity.
“I’m very much looking forward to attending upcoming industry events in the new year and as chair of our stakeholder groups having the opportunity to meet some of you,” he said.
